You ARE special!

This entire week I have been pulled back to a story that I discovered a few years ago when looking for a book to read with my daughter to let her know how much she is loved, not just by her family, but by God too. We stumbled upon “You are Special” by Max Lucado. It is the story of a sweet wooden boy who lives in a town that uses stickers to show worth. If you think someone has done something special, you give them a star sticker. If not, they get a gray dot sticker. This boy tried so hard to get stars, but always ended up with dots and after time he just quit trying. Then he encounters a girl with NO stickers! Intrigued, he asks her how that works and she tells him that she just visits The Maker daily and the stickers don’t stick anymore. Our sweet boy decides to visit The Maker himself and discovers that all that really matters is that The Maker loves him….and that is enough.
The stickers only stick if they matter to you.
This world is so quick to cover us with gray dot stickers, and it is so easy to let them stick to us and cause us to believe what those stickers seem to say. You are not good enough. You are not talented enough. You are not special enough. But as we have been learning this week, those stickers are lies!
The best way to overcome those lies is to replace them with Truth, God’s truth.
We can do this by spending time in His word and learning His truth, then make it personal. As Renee Swope said“The only way we’ll have a confident heart is if we move beyond knowing about God to knowing and relying on Him–to depending on His Word with our whole heart, mind and soul.”
Today, I want you to choose a verse that speaks truth to your situation. Then I want you to make it your own. One of my favorites is Ephesians 1:4 (NLT) “Even before he made the world, God loved ME, Ginny, and chose ME in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” He chose you too. You are handpicked by GOD, special, set apart, holy.
How could the words of the world ever compare to that?
Lord, thank you for hand picking us to be holy and without fault in your eyes. When we begin to allow the world to cover us with gray dot stickers, fill us with the truth that there is nothing on this earth that can separate us from the love that you have for us and that Your love surpasses everything else. When we are filled with doubt, anxiety, and our heart fails, help us to bring it to You and allow your peace to fill us. Guard our hearts and minds against the lies of the world and instead fill us with You. Amen.
